Heroes emerge in times of crisis. The pressure of the stormy sea tests the strength of the bow. When the storm comes, it will reveal what a person is made of. These days, we are seeing the storm of FAKE NEWS all around us. Few understand what drives the storm. As thousands scramble on the ground, dealing with day to day issues, scampering around in the weeds, a remnant emerges that “gets it.” The David and Goliath story, one of the most famous in all of scripture, highlights this point.

Boy Hero Emerges from Obscurity

David the boy stepped up to challenge Goliath long before he sat on the throne as King. What gave him the courage to take the challenge, even as others around mocked him for his audacity? Faith forged in the fire. Wisdom gleaned from practical experience.

You see, the shepherd boy of Bethlehem spent many a lonely night playing his harp and guarding the sheep, worshiping his God and keeping watch for intruders. Once in awhile, he had to draw on all the strength he had to go “mano a mano” with a lion or a bear.

Long before young David put five smooth stones into his pouch, he drew out his greatest weapon of all: his personal testimony. To a mocking Saul he declared:

“Don’t worry about this Philistine,” David told Saul. “I’ll go fight him!”

“Don’t be ridiculous!” Saul replied. “There’s no way you can fight this Philistine and possibly win! You’re only a boy, and he’s been a man of war since his youth.”

But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The LORD who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!”

Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And may the LORD be with you!”

Lara Logan is one of those heroes to me. I love hearing her talk because I know this woman’s words are tempered steel. She has covered conflicts all over the globe and has been a tried a true journalist dedicated to the truth at any cost. I first heard of her when she was raped by an Egyptian mob as she covered the “Arab Spring” in Cairo in 2011. She has emerged as a voice of reason in a world gone mad. Journalism as a whole may have succumbed to the death grip pf Fake News Media, but Lara is a burning ember that escaped the dumpster fire of groupthink and continues to be a spark of truth wherever she goes.

Here she is, this week, bringing clarity and conviction to the Putin vs Ukraine controversy that has enveloped us all like a tsunami these past couple of weeks.
